So You Want to Sell Your Soul...

The city, Midgar was full of people. Soulless, faceless people that ate and breathed and worked and slept. People who didn't have a prayer when it came to protecting themselves from the evils of the world. The monsters that lurked in the darkness, in the streets at night and threatened their very lives as they lay sleeping. Then there were the creatures that inhabited the city, just as monstrous and inhuman but somehow more honest about wanting to destroy you and for what reason.

The Turks were the last bastions of defense against the evils that was AVALANCHE led by Fuhito. They were the only thing separating the world from teetering beyond the brink of despair and falling into destruction. Everything they cared about would disappear. Homes, lives, family. They were a family. Drastic measures had to be taken, consequences notwithstanding. They were underpowered, short handed. There was no way to win against these guys. Reno could not let any more fall to Fuhito and his bunch. He had lost too many people he was willing to call friend. This was where it ended.

This room.

Reno held the grip of his EMR tightly, knuckles turning white with the force, standing in front of an impressively carved oak desk. It was an audacious plan, one that could backfire or cause any number of unexpected things, but it was their one last hope. They needed help, more power, something, and Reno was going to sacrifice himself to get it- not that he had that much humanity left anyway. Not with most of his friends six feet under. He was a lone turk against the world.

The person behind the desk was sitting in an over-sized winged back chair, facing the large floor to ceiling window overlooking the city basking in the glow of mako. Nothing was going to get done like that, he had power to buy and a soul to sell. He walked forward and grabbed the chair to swing it around.

In response, Sephiroth rises to his feet, his voice rising with him. Shinra has already pushed him quite far, and they seem intent on continuing to push him farther. "And how am I supposed to do that with half my personnel gone, along with my best men? I may be the general, but I am not capable of miracles. SOLDIERs are not machines, they're not monsters, they're human beings. They have their limits, and I won't lose any more of them if I can help it."

Reno isn't the only one who wishes things could return to what they once were. He wants his men back, his friends returned to him.

"I know that." His voice lowered, his anger subsiding, but he shook his head. "Do you really think Shinra cares about us?" He laughed again at that, no joy in the sound. "We're useful to them, no more." SOLDIERs had disobeyed orders too, and they were dead now. If he disobeyed orders, left Shinra, they would hunt him down as well. He had no choice in the matter. But then, he never had.

"You want my help for the Turks in particular?" That was different. He was willing to consider it. He could empathize. He had wanted change, not for Shinra, but for SOLDIER. "What is it you have in mind?"

"True enough, but as the safeguard, you must understand the burden shouldered by the so-called 'pet project'." What Shinra had asked of them, demanded of them, taken from them, until SOLDIER had broken under the weight. That was what it was now, broken, but he wanted to fix it.

"I'm willing to consider your proposal. Go on." If there were more particulars the Turk had in mind, he wanted to hear them. Although more than AVALANCHE, his mind was already fixed on another possibility: leaving Shinra.

Why didn't he fight for himself? One of the terrorists had asked him that. What an interesting question.

He was silent for a moment as he reflected, a long moment, one of the general's well-known pauses.

"We'll need more intelligence from you. There's much that isn't known about AVALANCHE." From his perspective, especially. His knowledge of current events ended with the incident at Modeoheim and the supposed "end" of the Genesis War.

"They're not necessarily to be found all in one place, which is why we haven't tried that kind of direct, decisive strike." That was why the Turks were utilized. If the fight against them was more like the Wutai War, things would be much more straightforward, but they're not. "We need something to draw them out, as well as together, if we're to do this."
